Relationship Counselling in Chilliwack and Online Across BC
Nobody books relationship counselling on a good week. You book it after the same fight for the fortieth time, or after a quiet stretch that has gone on too long, or because one of you finally said the word divorce out loud and it did not sound like a bluff. Sometimes one partner has been asking for this for a year and the other just agreed to get it over with. That is a fine way to arrive. It still works.
Who We Often See in Our Practice
Most couples who come in are not in crisis. They are stuck. The same argument keeps coming back with different details. One person pushes to talk and the other shuts down, and both of them are getting worse at it. Trust took a hit, from an affair or a lie or a run of small broken promises, and nobody knows how to get it back. Or nothing dramatic has happened at all. You just feel more like roommates than partners and you cannot remember when that started.
Do you need relationship counselling?
You keep having the same fight. Conversations that start small end up somewhere ugly. One of you goes quiet and the other cannot stand it. You avoid whole topics, money, sex, the kids, family, because you already know how it ends. You have stopped saying what you actually need because it did not go well last time. Or the anger, the drinking or the checking out on one side has become the thing the whole relationship organizes around.
None of these mean it is over. They mean the pattern is running you instead of the other way around.
What is actually going on
Almost every stuck couple is having two conversations at once. The one on the surface is about the dishes, the phone, the money, whose family gets Christmas. The one underneath is about whether you matter to each other, whether you are safe with each other, and whether the other person is on your side. Relationship counselling gets at that second conversation. Once you can have it directly, the first one gets a lot easier.
How relationship counselling works
Sessions are with a Registered Clinical Counsellor, in person at our Chilliwack office or online anywhere in BC. The counsellor is not there to referee or decide who is right. The job is to slow the pattern down enough that both of you can see it, name what each of you does when it gets hard, and practise doing something different while it is still happening in the room.
Some couples come in for a few sessions to get through a specific rough patch. Some come in to rebuild after trust has been broken. Some come in to figure out honestly whether to stay. All of those are legitimate reasons to be here.
Working on your relationship on your own
You do not need your partner in the room to work on your relationship, and sometimes the more useful work happens when it is just you. If you are the one who shuts down, or gets defensive, or lets things pile up until they come out sideways, that part is yours, and changing your half changes the whole dynamic. A lot of men come in this way, either because their partner will not, or because they would rather sort out their own side first. Individual sessions on relationship issues are one on one and confidential.
If your partner sent you
If you are here because your partner said counselling or else, you are not the first. You will not get lectured and you will not be treated as the problem. You will get a straight look at what is happening between the two of you and what part of it is actually in your control.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Relationship counselling is one on one or couples work with a Registered Clinical Counsellor, focused on what is happening between you and the people closest to you. It looks at how you argue, how you avoid, how you repair things after they go wrong, and what each of you actually needs from the other. The aim is not to referee or assign blame. It is to understand the pattern well enough that you can change it.
-
No. Some couples come in together for every session. Others alternate, or one partner comes in on their own for part of the work. We will talk about what makes sense for your situation in the first session and adjust as we go.
-
Yes. You can work on your relationship without your partner in the room. How you handle conflict, what you do when you feel criticized or shut out, and whether you say what you need are all yours to work on, and changing your half changes the dynamic. Many people start this way and their partner joins later once they see something shift.
-
Usually not. Couples often wait years longer than they should, and still get somewhere. Counselling can help you rebuild, and it can also help you figure out honestly whether to stay, and how to handle it well if you do not. Both of those are real outcomes. The only time it is genuinely too late is when neither person is willing to look at their own part.
