If you’re looking for a counsellor for men in Vancouver, you may not be looking for someone to simply ask how you feel.

You might want a place where you can talk openly, figure out what’s actually going on, and come away with a clearer understanding of what to do next.

I'm Ariel Dumais, a Registered Clinical Counsellor and founder of Solid Ground Wellness. Before private practice, I spent several years in residential recovery, including coordinating a program that housed and supported men on bail, followed by six years as a Mental Health and Substance Use Clinician with Fraser Health.

Most of my career has been spent working with men in the middle of hard situations, and that's still the work I do. I see men across Vancouver and the rest of BC through secure online sessions.

A Practical Approach to Therapy for Men

Therapy doesn't have to feel vague or uncomfortable. My goal is to create conversations that are useful.

We'll look at what you're experiencing, what might be contributing to it, and what you can actually do differently. That might mean understanding patterns you've carried for years. It might mean learning new ways to manage stress, communicate with your partner, handle conflict, or respond when emotions start building.

Sometimes the work is deeper. Sometimes it's very practical. Usually, it's a combination of both.

You also don't have to arrive knowing how to explain everything perfectly. Part of counselling is figuring that out together.

Men's Counselling in Vancouver

There are plenty of reasons men come to counselling.

Sometimes there’s an obvious problem: a relationship is struggling, work has become overwhelming, anger is getting harder to control, or anxiety is interfering with everyday life. Other times, it’s harder to put a name to it.

You might be doing everything you’re supposed to be doing: working, taking care of your family, paying the bills, keeping up with responsibilities. But you still feel frustrated, disconnected, exhausted, or stuck. Counselling gives you somewhere to look at that honestly.

I work with men dealing with:

  • Anxiety and persistent worry

  • Stress and burnout

  • Substance use and addiction

  • Anger and irritability

  • Relationship and communication problems

  • Separation and divorce

  • Fatherhood and parenting

  • Work and career pressure

  • Low self-esteem or confidence

  • Feeling disconnected or emotionally shut down

  • Major life changes

  • Grief and loss

  • Difficulty setting boundaries

  • Men's identity and expectations

  • Feeling stuck or unsure about what comes next

Anger Management Counselling

Anger usually isn't the real problem. More often it's covering for something harder to sit with, like grief, shame, fear, or embarrassment, things most men were never taught how to handle.

We'll work on what to do in the moment when things start to build, and on what's underneath it, so you're not just gritting your teeth through every conflict. This isn't a canned program. It's built around you and your life.

Counselling for Stress and Burnout

Vancouver can be a great place to live, but it isn't always an easy place to live. Housing costs, long workdays, raising a family, career pressure, commuting, relationships, and the general cost of keeping everything moving can add up.

For many men, the response is to keep pushing. That can work for a while.

Eventually, though, stress can start showing up as irritability, poor sleep, anxiety, low motivation, relationship problems, difficulty concentrating, or a feeling that you're constantly running on empty.

Counselling can help you understand what's driving that stress and develop healthier ways of responding to it, without pretending the pressures in your life aren't real.

Substance Use and Addiction

I've worked in addictions for over a decade, from residential recovery to community mental health and substance use work. Whether you want to quit, cut back, or just take an honest look at how much you're using, we can start wherever you are. No lectures and no ultimatums.

Online Counselling in Vanocuver

Between traffic, bridges, and long workdays, getting across town for an appointment can be the reason counselling never happens. Online sessions take that off the table. You can meet from home, a quiet office, or your parked truck, anywhere you can talk privately.

All you need is a phone or computer and a decent connection. Sessions may be covered by extended health plans that include Registered Clinical Counsellors, and I also work with ICBC clients.

Relationship Counselling for Men

Relationship problems are another common reason men reach out.

Maybe you and your partner keep having the same argument. Maybe communication has become difficult. Maybe there's distance between you and you don't know how to close it.

You might also be going through a breakup, separation, or divorce and trying to figure out what life looks like afterward.

Individual counselling gives you space to examine your own part in your relationships without turning every conversation into a question of blame.

We can work on communication, emotional awareness, boundaries, conflict, trust, and understanding the patterns you tend to fall into when relationships become difficult.

A bit about how we work

As therapists for men, we meet you where you are. We are not going to hand you a diagnosis and a label at the door or push you toward one outcome before you have even sat down. We build some trust, we get honest about what is going on, and we work on the things you want to change. Whether you are here for anger, your relationship, substances, low mood, or something you cannot put into words yet, that is a place we can start from.
